Cohort Sistas Launches the 3.1% Campaign
Today, on March 1st, at the intersection of Black History Month and Women’s History Month, we launch the 3.1% Campaign — our first advocacy and fundraising campaign to support our work to increase the representation of Black women with doctoral degrees. According to the National Science Foundation’s Survey of Earned Doctorates, only a meager 3.1% of doctoral degrees in 2018 were awarded to Black women. With the goal of increasing that percentage to 5% by 2030 through our programming, the 3.1% Campaign will help us fund our mission and supply much-needed resources, mentorship programs, and an active community for Black women pursuing doctoral education.
There are three main ways you can help support the 3.1% campaign:
Shop 3.1% merch: we've designed t-shirts, hoodies, totes, and mugs so you can proudly declare that you're part of the 3.1% (either now or in the future!) It's a great conversation starter and way to spread information about the scarcity of Black women with doctoral degrees
Support the 3.1% Fund: we've got a big goal to raise 31,000 in 31 days so we can expand our programming and offer scholarships to some of our paid resources, so if you're in a place financially where you're able to donate, we would be grateful for your support. If you can't donate but want to share with your community, we've created an easy email template you can copy-paste and share with your networks!
Share your story on social media using #3Point1Percent: We want to flood the internet today with images of what the 3.1% looks like! Share a picture of yourself and your research or work on Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #3Point1Percent. Make sure to tag @cohortsistas so we don't miss it, and we'll be retweeting and resharing your posts as well!
